Hosted on Zoom by ARTISANS' Centre
ARTISANS’ Centre, established in 2011, champions India’s contemporary craft and culture to support creative livelihoods, nurture sustainable design and development, and inspire conscious living. With an impact on more than 10,000 artisans, ARTISANS' is a movement to change lives, in a world that values the handmade.
Leading this workshop will be Rokozeno Chaya, a young designer from the Angami tribe of Nagaland, India. She learned traditional back-strap loom weaving from her grandmother, who inspired her to research and design Naga textiles. She has also trained in textiles weaving and dyeing techniques at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, India.
The decorative embroidered seams will be applied to a Naga hands-free sling bag, with materials included in the materials pack. Each Naga tribe has its distinct weave, and for those in the know, a tribe can be identified by the pattern that they
wear or carry. For instance, in the Konyak district, it is mandatory for all students to carry an Anghya Nyekok, literally meaning the Queen’s Bag, a chevron pattern made exclusively for the royal Angh family.
In this workshop, you will make an adaptation of the traditional sling bag, from a single strip of back-strap woven nettle cloth. You will join the seams with decorative stitches, using hand spun nettle yarn, cotton, and an embroidery thread of your choice. This bag is designed to fit an iPad.
Experience required: basic sewing or embroidery
A material pack will be sent to participants prior to the workshop containing materials to make a hands-free sling bag, including one back-strap woven nettle cloth from Leshemi Origins, hand-spun nettle yarn, cotton threads, and a handmade wooden button.
Participants will need to provide:
- 2 x pieces of cotton or linen cloth, cut 8” x 25” (20.30cm x 63.5cm) long
- 3 x contrasting colours of embroidery threads (Anchor or AMC)
- 1 x button
- 1 x tapestry needle.
Please note: Material packs are shipped on an insured, trackable delivery service. Any customs duties, delays, lost or undeliverable packages are the responsibility of the customer. Once a material pack leaves the workshop tutors' hands with a tracking number, the seller has no further obligation to the buyer.
