Online workshop, hosted on Zoom by Rebekah Johnston
Rebekah Johnston is a textile artist living and working in Nottingham, England. She creates one-off quilted textiles exploring themes of emotional wellbeing. Each piece is slow stitched by hand.
Sustainability is at the heart of her practice. Natural fibers are responsibly sourced; remnants from dressmaking or repurposed fabrics are given new life in handcrafted quilts and hangings that can be passed down and enjoyed by future generations.
Rebekah enjoys the creative challenges that working with fabric remnants provides. Offcuts from previous projects are intuitively arranged into abstract compositions as a new story unfolds through the making process. She is fascinated by the interplay between light and shadow, positive and negative space and the visual tension between these elements, softened with hand stitched textures.
Outline of the workshop
Make a wall hanging approx 33 x 44 cm ( slightly larger than A3) using hand sewing techniques.
In this workshop, Rebekah will guide you through her process of creating a balanced composition guided by the shapes found within scrap fabrics. Using linen offcuts you will use relaxing and mindful slow-stitched techniques to attach your fabrics and add texture. At the end of the two sessions, you will have a completed wall hanging, ready to hang with the addition of a wooden doweling.
Techniques that will be covered in the workshop: approaches to composition, needle turn and raw edge appliqué, sashiko boro-inspired patching, constructing a quilt sandwich, hand quilting, hand-finished binding using the quilt backing, and sewing a hanging sleeve.
