Saturday 19 February 2023, Meet Graham Hollick
Online event, hosted on Zoom by Graham Hollick
After a long career in Art Direction, Styling and Trend-forecasting and Theatre Design, Graham Hollick was introduced to the traditional craft of rug hooking by a friend, bringing him back to his original training as a textile designer.
Inspired by the idea of making a new creation from something discarded and unloved, he realised during the first Covid-19 lockdown that he was all set up with the required materials to start on a body of work.
Graham’s fascination with folk art masks, and his personal collection of them, gradually can have more and more resonance as masks became a profound symbol of the pandemic. He started work on a series small rug hooked pieces featuring marks on a stark black background. He has since made twelve of these before moving onto pieces inspired by street art and others based on colleges made with ‘found’ imagery.
All his ‘rugs’ are made from strips of fabric cut from used clothing predominantly wool, and the base layer through which he hooks are also used coffee sacks.
