Hosted on Zoom by Sarah Ward of Lark & Bower
Sarah Ward is a UK based hand-weaver most known for her work as The Aviary Studio, with 10+ years of experience working with mills, brands, manufacturers and design studios.
During lockdown in 2020, with no access to her loom or studio, Sarah began weaving off-loom with needle and thread, using whatever bits of yarn and card she could find around the house and making small studies of her favourite weave structures: twill, herringbone, houndstooth and hopsack. Having discovered the joy of this technique and its relaxing, therapeutic quality, Sarah wants to share this craft with others.
Outline of the workshop
You will learn how to weave without a loom, using a wooden board and a needle and thread!
In this workshop we'll put functionality and fashion aside for a moment to celebrate woven cloth, and the structures used to create it. Twills, herringbones, dogtooth, hopsack–typically part of a functional product, garment or home furnishings-now shown as artworks, to be displayed and admired as a painting or a sculpture would be.
Sarah will guide you through the history of the woven fabrics and their structures. Though first developed for its functionality, weaving has long been practiced as a form of expression, like many other artistic disciplines. Yet, in today's fast paced fashion culture, we have started to think of textiles as 'disposable’ and the craft of weaving is perceived as devalued. Through these weavings, you will be able to re-familiarise with the human input that goes into our clothing, and the skill, patience and craftsmanship of makers.
Using a needle and thread is a great exercise for learning the basics of weaving without the complexity of the loom. By the end of the workshop you will have started 5 different designs, and will be feeling equipped and inspired to try some of your own ideas!
A recording will be available after the workshop for a limited time for you to review.
A material pack and instruction manual will be sent to participants prior to the workshop which will contain:
- 5 x A6 plywood boards
- 2 x different sized needles
- Double sided tape
- Paper simulations of the 5 designs
- Some extra weave structures to try on your own later
Participants will also need to provide:
- Scissors (ones that you don’t mind cutting double sided tape with, not your best fabric scissors!)
Level of experience required:

Please note: material packs are shipped on an insured, trackable delivery service. Any customs duties, delays, lost or undeliverable packages are the responsibility of the customer. Once a material pack leaves the workshop tutors' hands with a tracking number, the seller has no further obligation to the buyer.
