Hosted on Zoom by Jennifer Raish
Traditional quilting techniques are reworked by Jennifer Raish in striking and quirky designs that function both as a piece of art and a comforting quilt for a winter's evening. Having trained in fine art, Jennifer began exploring how she could use textile techniques, such as stitching, crochet and fashion sculpture to add texture and a materiality to her fine art practice. She now works full‐time as a quilt maker, teacher and visual artist. Originally from the United States, Jennifer has recently relocated to Fehmarn, a small German island in the Baltic Sea. A place with a rich textile history that has informed her quilt making.
Outline of the workshop
In this workshop, participants will make quilted coasters, or small art quilts, entirely by hand - no sewing machine needed! A small project like this offers a great, low-pressure way to give something new a try. If you are new to quilting, Jennifer will take you through the basics of quilting. Experienced quilters could use this workshop as an opportunity to play with new artistic ideas and work in a community.
Participants will begin from scratch with designing simple patchwork compositions. A few different hand sewing techniques will be reviewed, followed by hand-quilting, and then finishing the pieces with an attractive edge stitch. Once comfortable with the sewing techniques taught here, this is a simple and fast project that makes a great gift!
This class is beginner-friendly but it is beneficial to be comfortable with using a needle and thread. The included materials pack contains enough material for at least four coasters.
A material pack will be sent to participants prior to the workshop containing:
- cotton batting
- 10” x 20” piece rare Nani Iro cotton-linen fabric
- A few extra fabric pieces
- Two types of sewing needles
- Ball-head pins
- Basting pins
- One 25-meter skein perle 8 cotton thread
- One spool of hand-quilting thread
Other tools recommended to have to hand:
- Fabric scissors
- Needle threader
- Fabric scraps (note: cotton and/or linen recommended for beginners)
- Sewing and embroidery thread
- Thread wax if your sewing thread is not specifically for hand quilting. For example, if it is standard cotton or all-purpose thread
- Iron and ironing board
Please note: material packs are shipped on an insured, trackable delivery service. Any customs duties, delays, lost or undeliverable packages are the responsibility of the customer. Once a material pack leaves the workshop tutors' hands with a tracking number, the seller has no further obligation to the buyer.
