Online workshop, hosted on Zoom by Jackie Parsons
A project for parents and/or grandparent and children to create a doll together.
This workshop is an opportunity to breathe new life into favourite items of clothing that have passed their best or to use remnants too beautiful to throw away. Textiles that have had a previous life can add depth of meaning and evoke associated memories, adding a personal connection to a handmade doll.
Children have played with dolls forever. Ragdolls have been found in Egypt, dating back to the first century BC. Dolls have been used to teach children to sew. There is also recent evidence that playing with dolls can help develop social skills, theory of mind and empathy: so essential 'kit' in a child's life.
Jackie Parsons is a designer and the founder of Scobel Clothing, a brand with a 'pared to the bone' aesthetic, made from practical traditional fabrics sourced surplus or from sustainable mills. Parsons will be hosting this workshop and sharing her skills with the participants.
Outline of the workshop
For this workshop, Parsons has kept the techniques and equipment simple, leaving scope for those with limited equipment and varying skill levels to navigate the project and bring their touch. She will support you in finding the best materials within your wardrobe to create a one-of-a-kind doll with your child. Working together, you will create something personal meaning and celebrate the connection between mothers and children.
Level of experience required
Materials
This workshop will not provide kits, as we would like to encourage you to find pieces of clothing in your collection that can be repurposed. The fabrics could be sourced from clothing that has outgrown its usefulness or from scraps and remnants put aside for just such a project. Use your imagination.
The majority of shapes require the sewing of a straight line; the aim is to join two pieces of fabric together effectively, so there is no need to worry if there is a bump or two along the way, as this adds character to the finished piece,
The project is not just for one day; the skills learnt can form a foundation in various ways in later life. Jackie's interest in making clothes started as a child making clothes for her dolls and later for herself; this gave her a firm foundation for the skills needed in her practice today.
In addition, participants will need to provide:
- Sewing thread
- Pins and needles
- Scissors
- Any materials to apply to the fabric

The workshop will be recorded and the recording will be shared with you after the workshop. Please allow 7 working days for us to send you the recording.
