Online workshop, hosted on Zoom by Ýr Jóhannsdóttir
Ýr Jóhannsdóttir is a textile designer from Iceland, based in Berlin, working under the name Ýrúrarí. Her work is known for being humorous, energetic and bold where traditional textile techniques are used in upcycling unsellable second hand sweaters into new unique wearable art pieces. Ýrúrarí does not just mend the pieces she works with where there are holes, stains or any kind of flaws in the fabric, but also changes their construction, making them more unique and interesting to be worn and cared for. Ýrúrarí has made a name for herself in Iceland and got nominated for the Icelandic design awards in 2020 and has since then evolved a creative visible mending workshop as part of her M.art.ed degree. Her sweaters and knits have also gained international recognition and can be found in closets of known artists such as Erykah Badu and Noel Fielding but also in the collections of The National Museums of Scotland, Textiel Museum in the Netherlands and Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum.
Outline of the workshop
In the workshop you will learn different approaches using knitting to mend or personalise old knits with patchwork, knitting straight into the fabric and 3D knitted structures.
Ýr will guide you through the process of her work and approaches in a way that can be easily adapted to your own personal style to bring character to knits in need of mending or love.
Level of experience
The focus will be on knitting techniques so basic knowledge of knitting is required, but is still suitable for beginners in knitting. Please note that the workshop will be taught in the continental way of knitting.
