Uganda, Mekeka Designs, Natural Fiber Woven Meditation/Floor Cushion
Product name: Natural Fiber Woven Meditation/Floor Cushion
Type of product: Pillow
Description (story of the item):
Our square cornered cushion is handwoven by Grace Birungi and her team in Mukono, Uganda from locally sourced natural fibers. We strive for each textile to bring you as close to nature as possible, so we do not use synthetic dyes or process any of our weft materials beyond how they arrive from nature. Barkcloth comes directly from the Mutuba tree and is pounded by experts from Bukomansimbi, Uganda into supple cloth. Raffia is hand collected and stripped from each individual leaf and dried in the sun. The rust color of barkcloth is due to its expose to the sun, the darker it is, the longer it was dried. The black barkcloth comes from iron rich clay in Bukomansimbi, it is buried for 3-5 days to achieve the depth of color we have in our textiles. Each of these materials is woven on 4 harness counter marche floor looms. From the materials to the finishing, each step is traceable to the maker. Each textile is crafted entirely by hand from materials from nature. Slight variations in tone, surface, and structure are to be expected. Goods vary in design 5 -7%. Recommended for indoor use. (Pillow form not included)
*To truly find the connection between our textiles, self-care, and nature, each person will have access to a live (recorded option available) group meditation session with the purchase of a meditation/floor cushion. Our session will be led by Llenay
Ferretti, a meditation guide and MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) teacher trained at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Llenay has also been in the artisan field for decades and truly understands the intersection of self-care and textiles.
