Vietnam, Kilomet109, Mây Tunic Top
This delicate sheer organza dress is Kilomet109's sophisticated twist on a traditional kaftan. The making of the dress spans two regions of Vietnam and features the collaborative work of three groups of artisans. The silk thread is first hand-spun and dyed with ebony fruit - a local botanical cultivated in the Mekong Delta - in collaboration with a family of silk master artisans. Ebony fruit traditionally creates a deep charcoal black color however for this piece Kilomet109 experimented by using already oxidized dye to create a beautiful silver as well as a shade of smoky gray. To diversify the color range Thao brought the organza fibers to Northwest Vietnam for experimental dyeing in indigo and lac beetle resin with the Nùng An artisans with whom she collaborates.
For the final step the piece is hand stitched and hand embroidered at Kilomet109's atelier in Hanoi. It has concealed buttons on the placket and mother of pearl buttons along the side to allow for styling. This piece has a number of exquisite details including an embroidery line down the center back, and an asymmetric facing on the front and back of the garment. it creates a head turning contrast with whatever under-piece it’s paired with.
100% organza silk. Withdraw embroidery detail along the center back. Mother of pearl buttons. Naturally dyed with versions available in Summer Sky Blue (indigo dye), Navy Blue (indigo dye), Red (lac beetle resin dye), Silver (ebony fruit dye) and Smoky Gray (ebony fruit dye).
