This luxurious 100% handwoven tussah silk "Mun Jacket" is one of the signature pieces from Kilomet109's most recent collection. The story behind the making of the coat centers on Vietnam's southern Mekong Delta region, with the contribution of more than 10 artisans and featuring some of the most impressive silk weaving and natural dyeing traditions of Vietnam's Khmer community.
The silk is hand-spun and dyed with ebony fruit - a local botanical cultivated in the Mekong Delta - in collaboration with a family of silk master artisans. In order to achieve the rich charcoal black color the fabric is dyed more than forty times over a period of three months. At the completion of the dyeing process the silk is buried in Mekong river mud whose iron rich soil acts as a perfect dye mordant, fixing the color so there is no bleeding. For the last step, the silk is pounded and polished with a wooden hammer to smooth out the fabric surface and create a remarkable sheen similar to leather. The contrasting peach blossom pink piping is made from satin that is dyed using a traditional work bark dye.
The jacket is designed and made at Kilomet109's home studio in Hanoi. It takes 10 days to sew and stitch one Jacket. Every aspect of the coat is handmade except for the zipper and belt clasp. Thao's innovative coat design compliments the traditional craftsmanship whilst elevating it to something more sophisticated and stylish.
