About Madder Cutch and Co.
In 2014, Nicola Cliffe, the founder of Madder Cutch and Co., made a bold career change, leaving behind a teaching career to pursue her passion for textile design. This shift opened up a world of creativity and led her to start her own business, where she oversees every aspect - from design to production.
Working from her charming garden studio in Stamford, Lincolnshire, Nicola draws inspiration from the natural beauty around her, particularly the delicate flowers in her garden.
Her design process begins with a simple, elegant idea, which she transforms into a flowing repeat pattern - all hand-printed on luxurious linen. Nicola’s commitment to simplicity, sustainability, and craftsmanship shines through in every piece she creates. She uses carefully selected, sustainably sourced plant dyes like Madder, Indigo, and Mulberry, all of which have a timeless beauty and minimal environmental impact.
Madder Cutch and Co. offers a range of thoughtfully crafted home décor items including cushions, curtains, blinds, and lampshades - all made by local artisans including Nicola herself. The brand is proud to work closely with customers, offering bespoke colours and designs inspired by nature’s finest hues. Nicola also shares her knowledge through mentoring and has published Printing with Natural Dyes, helping others discover the beauty of sustainable textiles.
