Bokja London Popup: A Multisensory Voyage
Nestled in the heart of Notting Hill, Bokja’s London popup at 85 Ledbury Road invites visitors on a sensory journey celebrating the art of textiles, storytelling, and craftsmanship. Open until March 25th, 2025, this unique space offers more than just a shopping experience—it’s a vibrant showcase of creativity, sustainability, and heritage.
Founded in 2000 by Huda Baroudi and Maria Hibri, Bokja is a Beirut-based design collective known for its distinctive assemblage aesthetic. By transforming antique furniture with exquisite textiles sourced along the Silk Road and crafting layered, textured surfaces, Bokja reimagines and preserves the rich textile traditions of their region. The collection embodies the spirit of Beirut—a city where tradition meets innovation, and East blends seamlessly with West.
The word “Bokja” refers to the fabric bundle traditionally used to wrap a bride’s dowry, a name that reflects the collective’s emphasis on connection, community, and intricate craftsmanship. Today, their team of artisans and designers—representing over 10 countries—explores themes of identity, impermanence, and cultural resilience through their creations.
Visitors to the popup can discover an eclectic range of Bokja’s work, Each piece is a testament to sustainability and craftsmanship, reflecting the collective’s zero-waste philosophy and commitment to empowering regional craft communities. Sustainability is not just an ethos for Bokja—it’s their cornerstone. They advocate for ecological awareness and social justice, and use textiles as a medium to inspire meaningful change.
The popup also hosts bi-monthly Tuesday events, each designed to engage a different sense. The first event, held on January 21st, saw founders Maria and Huda share Bokja’s origins and their experiences along the Silk Road. On February 4th, guests can look forward to a regenerative sound experience, offering an opportunity to connect with rhythm and resonance.
Beyond the popup, Bokja’s artistry is showcased at the newly opened Meat the Fish restaurant in London. Drawing inspiration from Beirut’s public gardens, Bokja created a captivating wall tapestry featuring iconic elements from their archives and the local ecosystem, demonstrating their talent for translating heritage into contemporary design.
Whether you’re seeking artistic inspiration, a deeper connection to textile traditions, or simply a moment to appreciate masterful craftsmanship, Bokja’s London popup is a destination worth visiting. Stop by for orange blossom tea, immerse yourself in the beguiling narratives woven into every thread, and celebrate the transformative power of their craft.
