Clerkenwell Design Week 2024: Granite + Smoke x Roger Oates Design

For Clerkenwell Design Week 2024, Granite + Smoke launch their new hand tufted rugs made in collaboration with British Rug makers Roger Oates Design, crafted sustainably in the UK.

Made using a 100% British blended wool, a specially developed yarn spun and dyed in Yorkshire. Each rug has been sculpted by specialist hand techniques to create a 3D pile effect.

The 'Infinite loops' rug depicts two graphic elements interconnected, a heavy curve and a light curve forming a circle. The synergy of these two elements continuously move through the pattern forming a repetitive and dynamic motion. Circles are captivating, symbolising infinity and continuity. They represent the endless cycles of life with no beginning or end.

The 'Axo' rug is inspired by architectural drawing techniques called axonometric perspective or axonometry, a way of representing three-dimensional objects within a 2D projection. The repetitive geometric motifs and colours travel across the rug to create a spectrum of depth, and vibrancy.

Roger Oates Design hand tufted rugs are produced in their Devon workshop. Individually made by a small specialist team, blending cutting edge technology with traditional techniques. From the initial drawings to production, every hand tufted rug goes through a number of steps, with each one produced by hand using a number of unique approaches to hand tufting. Each rug can have various pile heights and surface finishes created by using different types of wool, tufting and hand finished techniques.

Granite + Smoke is Lindsey Hesketh and Claire Canning, life-long friends and design professionals. The studio, founded in 2019, draws from their multi-disciplinary backgrounds, Lindsey in architecture and Claire in interiors and textiles.
