37 Seasons is a cinematic celebration of textiles and reinvention, from the award-winning filmmaker Oliver David. Through the medium of film, David delves into the life and creative journey of renowned designer Helen David, whose career is a remarkable tale of resilience and artistry.
Helen David first burst onto the fashion scene in the early 1980s when she founded her iconic label, English Eccentrics, while living in a Brixton squat and selling her designs at Camden Market. By the mid-1990s, her eclectic and innovative approach to fashion had gained international acclaim, dressing stars such as Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, Princess Diana, Helen Mirren, and Helena Bonham-Carter. English Eccentrics became synonymous with its distinctive textile designs, earning a place in prestigious museum collections like the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1999, the label was recognised with the British Fashion Award for Eveningwear.
However, the meteoric success of English Eccentrics came to an unexpected halt at the turn of the millennium. In 37 Seasons, Oliver David unpacks the highs and lows of his mother’s career, exploring her remarkable artistic reinvention after the collapse of her brand. The documentary, which won Best Documentary at the Sarajevo Fashion Film Festival 2024, offers an intimate portrait of Helen David’s resilience, creativity, and enduring passion for textiles.
The premiere will be followed by a Q&A session featuring Helen David, director Oliver David, and fashion editor Sarah Bailey, offering deeper insights into the making of the film and Helen’s inspiring journey. Guests are also invited to an afterparty in Soho Hotel’s Indigo Room, complete with drinks and canapés.
Tickets for the event are free but limited and seats are selling quickly, so early booking is advised. The screening will take place on Monday, 27th January, 6:15 PM in Soho Hotel’s Screening Room 1.
