Fashion in Film - GROUNDED: Fashion's Entanglements with Nature

Fashion in Film - GROUNDED: Fashion's Entanglements with Nature

This spring, the Fashion in Film Festival returns. Running in London from 20 May - 1 June, and UK wide during September and October 2025, the festival presents its 8th edition with a season that feels both elemental and electric. Titled GROUNDED: Fashion’s Entanglements with Nature, the festival turns the lens of cinema onto the tangled, tactile relationship between fashion and the natural world to interrogate, reimagine and restore.

Métamorphoses du Papillon, France, 1904, Dir. Gaston Velle.

Spanning over a century of filmmaking, from early 20th-century reels to contemporary works alive with urgency, GROUNDED invites us into a world where cloth, clay, bodies, earth, and image converge - sometimes harmoniously, sometimes with startling friction. Across more than 80 films and 16 venues - from bustling London cinemas to more intimate spaces in the South West and Scotland - the festival reaches across time and place to stitch together a rich, polyphonic narrative.

Rather than casting nature as a static backdrop, GROUNDED centres it as an agent with its own voice, moods, and power, offering cinema as an escape into a landscape of enchantment. Through five thematic strands - From the Ground Up, Uncommon Ground, Otherground, Shaky Ground and Ancestral Ground - the programme plunges into everything from the raw material of fashion (cotton, silk, dyes) to its impact on labour, land, and lineage.

There is a Garden in My Head. Neterlands, 1987. Dir Jaques Verbeek, Karin Wiertz.

The season's curated highlights are a feast for the senses. Experimental choir Musarc’s specially commissioned score resonates like an ancient wind through a new forest. Celluloid dreams and restored reels by visionary filmmakers - among them Ulrike Ottinger, Věra Chytilová, Rosine Mbakam, Wang Bing, and the Brothers Quay - offer kaleidoscopic meditations on transformation, decay, hybridity, and hope. Surreal animations brush shoulders with vérité documentaries; fashion flickers between shield and skin.

Tray Tray Ko. Chile, 2022. Dir. Seba Calfuqueo.

In From the Ground Up, spinning wheels and dye vats remind us of the earth's bounty - and its burden. Uncommon Ground charts fashion’s entanglements with colonial histories and social injustice. Otherground ventures into myth and metamorphosis, where garments glisten with fantasy and danger. Shaky Ground pulses with the gravity of ecological collapse. And finally, Ancestral Ground brings us full circle, whispering of forgotten rituals, ancestral dress, and the power of costume to conjure a more enchanted world.

GROUNDED is curated with vision by Marketa Uhlirova and Dal Chodha, alongside a constellation of guest curators. Their collective labour is palpable, their intent urgent. Hosted by Central Saint Martins and supported by the BFI and other partners, the festival makes a vital case: that cinema is not only a mirror for fashion but a magnifying glass - one that reveals how threads, like roots, run deep. To watch these films is to walk barefoot across the soil of memory, material, and myth. Don’t miss it.
