Fiber in 3D: Indigo Houston
Indigo Houston, a site-specific installation by Baggs McKelvey, is the chosen installation of Fiber in 3D, an exhibition partnership between Fiber Art Now, a national craft organisation and quarterly journal, and Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. The undulations of this work, composed of nearly 6,000 feet of handcrafted denim rope, create an immersive environment that responds to the architecture of the HCCC’s gallery space. McKelvey’s primary material consists of more than 67 pairs of donated denim jeans that she disassembled, cut, tied, and spooled to create the textile rope. A commentary on the ubiquity and fraught social history of denim in the United States, Indigo Houston also serves as a testament to denim’s history as a craft material.

Fiber Art Now’s exhibition-in-print was juried by the Fiber Art Now creative team, Lori Butanis, Barbara Delaney, Cami Smith, and Beth Smith. The installation at HCCC was selected by HCCC Curator + Exhibitions Director Sarah Darro.
