From Sea Holly to Salt Marsh: St. Jude's x Angie Lewin
"Saltmarsh, Morston (above) is based on sketches made on the North Norfolk coastline on a sunny, breezy day, sitting on the saltmarsh amongst the sea campion and thrift, looking through the grass and flower stems. Across The Pit, a narrow stretch of water, I can see Blakeney Point. Strong yellow discs of cat’s ear flowers (also known as flatweed) stand out against the pale chalky colours of the other vegetation and the bright blue early summer sky." - Angie Lewin.

This year, St. Jude’s is celebrating two decades of bringing beautifully printed fabrics, wallpapers, and limited-edition artworks into our homes. Founded in 2005 by Angie Lewin and her husband Simon, St. Jude’s has grown from a modest idea into a much-loved design house. Today, it’s renowned for collaborations with some of Britain’s most exciting artists, including Mark Hearld, Emily Sutton, and Ed Kluz.
Pattern featured on Wild Flower Tea-towel. Designed as part of Angie's 2024 exhibition at the Watts Gallery in Surrey and inspired by the Watts Chapel.
It all started with a simple suggestion: a collector remarked that Angie’s prints might work well on textiles. That spark of inspiration led to the first two designs, and the rest, as they say, is history. The resulting patterns are a celebration of the natural world, echoing Angie’s love of wild landscapes and overlooked plants. Whether in her intricate wood engravings or her softly stylised fabrics and wallpapers, her work invites us to see beauty in seed-heads, sea holly, and salt marshes.
Patterned paper by Angie Lewin. One sheet each of four designs: Meadow Grass, Forest Floor (Green), Forest Floor (Rust) and Rockpool. Each of these patterned paper sheets originated from a small wood engraving.
There’s something summery and sunlit about Angie’s approach. Her prints feel like a walk along the Norfolk coast or a quiet afternoon in a garden brimming with life. Her inspiration is deeply rooted in nature and the change of seasons, as she herself notes: “When we moved to the Norfolk coast, the clifftops where we walked Milly (our border terrier) looked different every single day.”
It’s a gentle reminder to slow down, observe the landscape around us, and appreciate the simple joys that each season brings. Angie’s work feels especially resonant in summer, when gardens are in bloom and hedgerows are filled with the chatter of young birds waiting for their moment to scatter. Her distinctive style brings a touch of the British countryside.
