International Folk Art Market: Angel Chang
With the International Folk Art Market (11-14 July) in full swing, we shine a spotlight Angel Chang who wis exhibiting at speaking at the international event.
Angel Chang, whose eponymous zero-carbon womenswear line is made seed-to-button entirely by hand without electricity. Angel collaborates with indigenous tribes in the mountains using ancient techniques that follow the cycles of nature. The collection launched in 2020 and since Angel has given a TED Talk on How Ancient Textiles Can Help the Future and created TED-Ed lessons on the Lifecycle of a T-Shirt and The Wildly Complete Anatomy of a Sneaker.
Angel is about to embark on a two-year journey around the world (10 countries, 5 continents) to visit artisan villages and design her next collection of clothing, textiles and home/lifestyle items.
On this trip, Angel will partner with local co-ops and nonprofits to make handwoven textiles in India and Indonesia, red clay pottery in Mexico, date palm furniture in Egypt, beading with the Maasai in Kenya, embroidery with the Mayans in Guatemala, jewellery with the Waorani in The Amazon, and blankets with the Navajo (Diné) in the American southwest.
Every week, there will be videos posted on Angel's YouTube channel so people can follow the journey. Local indigenous filmmakers will also document the process from their perspective. Pre-orders will be taken at the end of each episode so production can begin immediately in the villages.
