Knit One, Purl Twenty: Loop Celebrates a Milestone Anniversary
When Susan Cropper opened Loop in Camden Passage twenty years ago this summer, she probably didn't imagine it would become the kind of place where strangers become friends over a shared love of cashmere, or where a Tuesday afternoon browsing session might turn into an impromptu lesson in Fair Isle technique.
But that's exactly what happened. The New Yorker's dream of recreating "the best yarn fair you can imagine" in a cosy London corner has blossomed into something rather magical - a shop that feels more like visiting a very stylish friend who happens to have impeccable taste in wool.

Walking into Loop is like stepping into a textile treasure trove. Skeins of hand-dyed yarn from La Bien Aimée catch the light alongside spools of vintage ribbon, while carefully chosen books and patterns line the shelves. It's the sort of place where you go in for one ball of yarn and leave with three new project ideas and possibly a vintage button or two that you absolutely must have.
Susan's eye for talent has always been spot-on. Over the years, she's collaborated with designers like Fiona Alice and Stephen West, publishing books that capture the Loop spirit - that perfect blend of traditional craft and contemporary flair. The shop has become a launching pad for emerging designers and a haven for established ones, all drawn to Susan's commitment to quality and her genuine enthusiasm for beautiful making.

Her efforts haven't gone unnoticed beyond the knitting world either. In 2009, she was runner-up for the 'BT Essence of Entrepreneur' award, and the Evening Standard later included her in their influential people list - recognition that speaks to Loop's impact on London's cultural landscape.
What makes Loop special isn't just the beautiful yarns or the carefully curated selection - it's the warmth Susan has created. Whether you're a nervous beginner clutching your first pair of needles or a seasoned knitter hunting for the perfect shade of mohair, you'll find the same genuine welcome and expert guidance that has made Loop feel like home to so many makers over the past twenty years.
