La Manufacture Cogolin Celebrates a Century of Exceptional Craftsmanship
The French rug atelier La Manufacture Cogolin announces its momentous 100th anniversary. The distinguished atelier, known for its rich heritage in crafting luxury textiles, celebrates a century of dedication, creativity, and resilience, positioning La Manufacture Cogolin as a pioneer in the industry. Preserved with vigilance and respect since the end of the 19th century, the French atelier has conserved its essence and savoir-faire from one generation to the next and the 100 year milestone is a testament to Cogolin's success and prestige.
The atelier maintains a design ethos which respects its history and the original design intent of its products. The most successful collections are rooted in archival designs, showcasing a commitment to maintaining the design style of Cogolin. Collaborations which reinterpret traditional patterns have also contributed to the brand's enduring legacy, blending historical aesthetics with a modern touch. Key collaborations over the years include the Jardin Intérieur collection with India Mahdavi, a Milan design week exhibition by film director Luca Guadagnino, and an immersive installation on display at Sketch, which highlighted a historic partnership with designer Christian Bérard.
Over the past century, La Manufacture Cogolin has been favoured by the world’s leading interior designers, famed fashion icons as well as prestigious fashion houses from Karl Legerfeld, Yves Saint Laurent, Audrey Hepburn and Mr Hubert De Givenchy to the fashion houses of Pierre Cardin, Hermès, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Lanvin and Christian Dior.
In the 1920’s La Manufacture Cogolin was one of the largest employers in the region. Their savoir-faire, combined with the skills of artisans working in the French tradition, enabled the company to grow rapidly, and even to prosper during WWII while many French ateliers were closed. Recognised for impeccable client services, each rug receives its own unique certificate of authenticity, representing the esteemed status and highly skilled craftsmanship of a La Manufacture Cogolin rug.
In addition to its 19th-century Jacquard handlooms, the workshop is home to over a hundred years of archives: order records, inspiration books, production drawings, albums of black-and-white photographs used in place of catalogues - a mine of inspiration for contemporary collections and bespoke projects. In 2022, Sarah Henry developed La Manufacture Cogolin’s first fabric collection in 40 years, a collection which Sarah felt was an important way of paying homage to the history of the brand which once produced fabrics alongside its rugs.
“The workshop is the heart of the company. I don’t know anyone who has entered into the weaving workshop without being captivated by these ancient wooden looms that have been in place here since the 1930’s - an irreplaceable legacy, and the nucleus of the identity and savoir-faire of the brand” - Sarah Henry, Managing Director of La Manufacture Cogolin.
As the atelier embarks on its next century, La Manufacture Cogolin remains a beacon of timeless craftsmanship, innovation, and dedication to creating exquisite textiles which transcend generations.
