London Design Festival 2024: Craft x Tech
Craft x Tech is a pioneering initiative that connects Japanese traditional crafts with modern ideas and technologies. By examining traditional craft materials and techniques from both historical and futuristic perspectives, the initiative transforms them into unique works of art, uncovering new possibilities within centuries-old craftsmanship. Through collaborations with various craft regions and renowned designers and artists, as well as research and lectures developed in partnership with the University of Tokyo, Craft x Tech aims to foster demand for traditional crafts, promote talent exchange, and contribute sustainably to Japan's craft industries.
The initiative facilitates collaborations between traditional craft regions and world-class creators. By bringing these creators to the regions for discussions and prototyping with local artisans, one-of-a-kind collectible art pieces are produced. These pieces are then presented and sold in limited editions both in Japan and internationally.
In partnership with the University of Tokyo’s Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, Craft x Tech also hosts a special lecture series. These dialogues between artisans and creators explore the history, present, and future of each craft region, while offering behind-the-scenes insights into each collaboration. This fosters a deeper understanding of the evolving role of traditional crafts.
Additionally, the initiative promotes research and development, blending traditional craft techniques with advanced technologies. By combining traditional materials with cutting-edge fabrication and materials science, Craft x Tech pioneers new forms of expression that bridge tradition and the future.
Craft x Tech will be part of Brompton Design District from 14 - 22 September 2024.
