LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL: MATERIAL MATTERS
Material Matters 2022 – Ruup & Form
Written by Ruby Wilson
Material Matters is a design fair boasting installations, a marketplace and an extensive talks programme, taking place in the Bargehouse at the Oxo Tower in Canary Wharf. The former factory setting will host a variety of exhibits that explore the importance of materials and their ability to influence the products they are used to create, as well as our lived experiences.
Ruup & Form is a gallery specialising in unique contemporary crafted objects, and their installation for the fair will feature the work of textile artist and former Chelsea College of Art Student, Beatrice Mayfield. Mayfield is Ruup and Form’s current ‘artist-in-resident’ and she specialises in hand-constructed, embellished, embroidered textiles. Her techniques focus on texture and dimension as well as subtlety and surprise - involving elements from pleating and quilting - to intricate stitching that works in harmony with a fabric’s movement. Mayfield’s collections have consisted of scarves, neck pieces and wood-framed broaches, which take an especially avant-garde approach to the traditional aesthetic of hand embroidery.

In collaboration with Material Matters, Beatrice Mayfield has created a site-specific installation for Ruup and Form. The piece is named ‘Reclaim’ and is made up of hanging textile panels. It takes inspiration from the ‘layers of history' and gentle decay of the Bargehouse building.
Alongside Mayfield, Material Matters will showcase the work of other multidisciplinary artists who experiment and push the boundaries of material conventions with their work. Particular attention is paid to craft, with glass, metal and ceramic works all featured.

Material Matters will also consider important questions surrounding our use of materials today. Reducing waste and working towards circular processes of creation are explored, with a range of designers using three-dimensional printing to create furniture out of natural materials.
Providing an extremely well-rounded exhibition of crafts and the materials that inform them, this celebration of creators and innovators is certain not to disappoint.
Material Matters runs from the 22 - 25 September at the Bargehouse, Oxo Wharf Tower, from 10:00am to 6:00pm and 11:00am – 4:00pm on the Sunday. Get your ticket here.
