Our Linen Stories: Flax Futures
Our Linen Stories: Flax Futures is a series of exhibitions and events celebrating contemporary design in flax fibre and linen, drawing on Scotland’s rich industrial and trading heritage. With a focus on sustainability and the regenerative textile economy, this initiative seeks to honour and innovate within these longstanding traditions.
This harvest season, FlaxFest24 in Dunfermline and beyond will be a cultural celebration of flax and linen, encompassing art, design, and industry. Building on the success of Scotland’s first Flax and Linen Festival in 2021, this event aims to further the appreciation and understanding of these materials.
Flax Futures, the current touring exhibition and set of collaborative design projects, includes educational outreach and the development of a regenerative textile network. In collaboration with key partners and local communities, the project seeks to share material culture and strengthen cultural connections. Visitors can explore recent exhibitions, local Linen Routes, Twilight Talks, Workshops, and community activities through the Events and Tours pages.
Since 2018, Our Linen Stories has brought exhibitions and events to Fife, the Lothians, the Borders, the Highlands, Northern Ireland, and Portugal. A landmark exhibition at Edinburgh’s Dovecot Studios in 2019/20 drew over 8,000 direct engagements, with many more connecting via social media. Flax Futures continues to explore Scotland’s deep connection with this quintessentially European textile, gathering stories from partner Linen Nations and fostering creative collaborations across borders.
