ROVE’s Cross Snood Hits UK Screens in BBC's Shetland
Fans of BBC’s Shetland may have noticed a striking accessory in Series 8: the Cross Snood by ROVE, worn by Alison O’Donnell’s character, Tosh. This surprise appearance has given rise to enthusiasm among viewers, with many contacting the brand to enquire about the design's availability. ROVE has responded by bringing back this popular style in a limited-edition run, now open for pre-orders.
The Cross Snood is a thoughtfully designed, reversible piece that offers two complementary colour-ways in one accessory. Its double-thickness knit provides warmth and comfort, making it a snug companion for cold-weather adventures - whether you're navigating the rugged landscapes of Shetland or enjoying a quiet stroll closer to home. It also encapsulates everything ROVE stands for. It is made from 100% Merino lambswool, ethically sourced from farms in Yorkshire that adhere to high animal welfare standards.
ROVE was established in 2013 by Rose Brown, whose upbringing in a creative family instilled a love for craftsmanship and sustainability. After studying textiles at Winchester School of Art and gaining experience in knitwear design for major brands, Rose became increasingly concerned about the dominance of mass production and its reliance on synthetic materials. A residency with Awamaki in Peru further shaped her perspective, as she witnessed the importance of preserving traditional craft skills.
These experiences inspired Rose to create ROVE, a knitwear brand that prioritises ethical production, natural materials, and enduring quality. Based in Margate, ROVE combines modern design with sustainable practices, producing pieces that are both timeless and environmentally responsible.
ROVE’s commitment to sustainability extends to its production processes. The Cross Snood is crafted either in the brand’s Margate studio or in collaboration with a family-run factory in Manchester, where small-batch production ensures minimal waste. Even leftover yarn is creatively incorporated into new designs, reflecting the brand’s dedication to reducing environmental impact.
ROVE’s emphasis on British craftsmanship is evident in every detail of its collection. From the initial design sketches to the final finishing touches, each piece reflects the skill and care of its makers. By working with local factories and sourcing materials from within the UK, ROVE not only supports traditional industries but also reduces its carbon footprint. And what's more, Rove also offer darning workshops for those interested in the traditional art of mending and repairing their favourite textiles.
The Cross Snood’s appearance in Shetland is a testament to the timeless appeal of ROVE’s designs. For those seeking a durable and stylish accessory with a meaningful backstory, this limited-edition piece offers both warmth and a connection to a rich heritage of British knitwear.
