V&A’s Fashion in Motion: A Catwalk and a Community

V&A’s Fashion in Motion: A Catwalk and a Community

January 27, 2025
Share

The Victoria and Albert Museum’s Fashion in Motion series continues to redefine the world of fashion by bringing free live runway events to the public. By transforming the museum’s grand spaces into captivating runways, it opens the door for everyone to experience the artistry, innovation, and fizzing atmosphere of a contemporary fashion show.

Kicking off 2025, the first Fashion in Motion event celebrates the rebellious creative synergy between designer Eden Loweth and artist Maggi Hambling. Loweth, co-founder of the genderless fashion label ART SCHOOL, is renowned for centring queer identity and embracing bodies beyond the binary in his work. His collaborative approach has made him a leading voice in contemporary design.

Eden Loweth and Maggi Hambling

Hambling is one of the UK’s most acclaimed artists, and was the first Artist in Residence at the National Gallery in London from 1980-81. She is celebrated for her dynamic paintings and sculptures held in prestigious collections across the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Tate gallery in London.

Their collaboration pays tribute to the late filmmaker Derek Jarman, a close friend of Hambling and a personal inspiration to Loweth. Drawing on Hambling’s distinctive, gestural mark-making, Loweth interprets her evocative paintings into a striking new collection that seamlessly fuses art and fashion.

This show has been so popular that unfortunately, tickets for the Eden Loweth x Maggi Hambling shows have already sold out. But fear not, as the 2025 Fashion in Motion series promises an ongoing lineup of visionary designers and groundbreaking collaborations. Keep an eye on the V&A website to secure a future spot.

David Lismore: V&A Fashion in Motion

Past Fashion in Motion showcases have featured Orange Culture, the Nigerian label known for its bold, gender-fluid designs that celebrate cultural heritage, and Korean designer Minju Kim, whose whimsical and sculptural creations have delighted audiences. Daniel Lismore also captivated with his theatrical up-cycled ensembles, blending historic regalia, vintage textiles, and found objects, and the series has, in the past, hosted iconic names like Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, and Kenzo, solidifying its reputation as a platform for creative excellence.

Vivienne Westwood: V&A Fashion in Motion

Fashion in Motion is about more than fashion, and what sets this series apart is its commitment to accessibility for all communities. By offering free tickets, the V&A ensures that anyone can experience the thrill of a live runway show—an opportunity typically reserved for the fashion elite. It opens the world of high fashion to new audiences, creating an inclusive platform where creativity can be appreciated by all.

Don’t miss the chance to witness these extraordinary shows firsthand. Stay tuned to the V&A’s calendar for future events and discover the inspiring creativity that defines Fashion in Motion.
