St Jude's is many things to many people; an art and design gallery, a workshop, a showroom, base for a mail order company. Owners Simon and Angie Lewin take a deep breath when asked to define their current endeavor “Ah.. that's a tricky one! We confess to being a bit confused ourselves!” “When I'm wearing the fabric hat we call it a workshop/showroom – but wearing my gallery hat is becomes a gallery/shop...That hasn't helped has it?” says Simon. No, not really but fortunately the work speaks for itself.
Set up in the summer of 2005 in a traditional double fronted shop, St. Judes features works from some of today’s most promising artists and printmakers. The focus is on British design from the 1930’s onwards and textiles are part of a eclectic collection of artworks and objects chosen by the tried and tested formula of personal taste. And that taste is impeccable, co-owner Angie Lewin is the designer behind an award winning collection of screen-printed fabrics sold exclusively at the Gallery.
The idea for the company was born when a collector of Angie’s prints mentioned that her work might translate well onto printed fabric. Simon and Angie were intrigued by that idea, and spent some time looking into how textiles are produced. They started with the simple aim of producing two of Angie’s designs and taking it from there. Since then St Jude’s has become a small but thriving business.
