12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS: BUROUGHS GARRET

This 'quarter' sized, figured coverlet is inspired by small cradle coverlets woven in the 19th century. Figured and fancy coverlets were popular bed coverings in America from ca.1820–1860, and these scaled down versions allowed coverlet weavers to advertise the patterns they offered.

With images of flora, fauna, and patriotic symbols, figured coverlets are a uniquely American artform, shaped during the period when textile making shifted from the handloom to the power loom.

Justin Squizzero, of The Burroughs Garret in Newbury, Vermont handweaves figured coverlets of US grown cotton and British wool, in designs adapted from 19th century examples.

The coverlets are woven on an 18thcentury handloom with the oldest, privately owned and operational 19th century Jacquard machine in North America. Working with traditional techniques on historic equipment, Squizzero’s textiles are a continuation of a clothmaking tradition that reaches back more than 200 years.
