12 Days of Christmas: Khadi and Co

12 Days of Christmas: Khadi and Co

December 6, 2020
Share

The Selvedge 12 Days of Christmas 2020 competitions are open! From 1 – 12 December you can enter to win each and every one of our 12 prizes by visiting our competition page. Every day while entries are open we will look at each prize in more detail. Today it’s the Khadi and Co Gift Bundle, which consists of two distinctly different pieces representing the diversity of Indian textile crafts. The first piece is a Chanderi Silk panel woven with gold threads on the borders. Hand block printed with various motifs in red and hand sewn appliques at each end, it is perfect as a curtain panel or for the table. 112cm x  236cm. The second piece is from the region of Kutch. Handwoven in a tribal community using local woolen yarn in shades of red, black and natural colours, the design is of various different stripes with small geometric motifs and long twisted tassels. 96cm x 234cm.

Danish textile designer Bess Nielsen launched Khadi and Co in 2005 to pursue her fascination with handwoven textiles. Throughout her 30-years long career she has travelled extensively to and across India to work with many skilled craftspeople. Her long journey into the rich legacy of Indian textile crafts led her to understand the profound cultural significance of khadi, a humble cotton fabric and a symbol of India’s Freedom Movement. A hand spun and handwoven cloth, khadi is Bess Nielsen’s long-lasting inspiration and ultimately her life’s work. Hand spun yarns have an indisputable organic quality, making garments light, breathable and uniquely soft on our skin. While exploring the infinite beauty of various weaves, Bess Nielsen has developed a deep connection with the fabric that permeates gently her minimalist design.
