12 Days of Christmas: Win an Indigo Quilted Jacket from Soham Dave
Indigo is a dye that rewards slowness. Its colour gathers in layers, deepening with each careful dip of the cloth. In the atelier of Soham Dave, this slowness becomes a way of working — a philosophy that honours time, materials, and the people whose hands shape every garment.
Soham’s fascination with clothing began long before he trained as a designer. As a child, he stood spellbound before the family tailor’s foot-pedalled machine, watching fabric move in rhythm with the craftsman’s hands. Although he first studied electrical engineering, the pull of textiles never subsided. His path took him from his family’s retail shop to NIFT Gandhinagar, then to SEWA, where he worked alongside women for whom craft was a livelihood, and later to FIT in New York. By the time he returned to Ahmedabad, he knew the kind of design he wanted to pursue had little to do with trends and everything to do with integrity.

When he founded his label in 2011, the studio was small: one tailor, one sewing machine, and a willingness to learn. Over time, a network of weavers, dyers, printers, and artisans gathered around the brand, forming a collaborative ecosystem where every fabric and garment passes through human hands. Cotton is woven on hand-operated looms, prints are stamped with carved wooden blocks, and textiles are washed in open pools and dried in the sun. Natural dyes replace synthetic ones, offcuts are upcycled into buttons and trims, and plastic hardware is intentionally avoided so that garments can return to the earth at the end of their life.

This way of working is slow, but it yields material with soul. Their slight irregularities — the softness of a slub, the individuality of a stitch — become evidence of touch. The silhouettes remain minimal, but texture, depth and the unmistakable warmth of craft bring them to life. This spirit was visible during London Textile Month 2025, when Soham Dave presented their new collection at the Selvedge Designer Showroom at Asia House, highlighting leading contemporary designers from India.
Today, Soham Dave's philosophy remains constant: beauty lies in detail, design is a way of life, and sustainability is an ongoing responsibility rather than a label.
