A Letter from Lotta Jansdotter
Born on an island in the middle of the Baltic Sea in Scandinavia, the textile designer Lotta Jansdotter now lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Her eponymous company has been going for 20 years and she has produced countless designs and motifs for fabric, home wares, paper goods, bags, rugs and much more.
I have taught my print making techniques and held workshops in many different places, in my studio here in Brooklyn of course, on a lovely roof top terrace in Los Angeles, in a big shed outside in the remote country side in Gujarat India, in barns in Scandinavia and in an old factory garage with no walls in Merida, Mexico. But I have never taught in a castle, in France...
I am so delighted to be invited by Selvedge Magazine to Chateau Dumas this August to teach and share what I love to do: create and print patterns and motifs onto paper and fabrics.
In this week long workshop we are going to explore different ways of making prints using many different techniques. We will carve stamps, potatoes, create our own foam blocks, explore wooden stamps and try stencilling. I want to show you that one can create rather stunning and creative things using simple and cost effective materials. I will also share my thoughts about inspiration and design ideas as well as some thoughts about colour choices and decisions.
We will also explore and learn about ways of creating repeat designs and layouts.
We take a break from printing mid-week to enjoy a day of dyeing with woad, the original blue dye from the woad plant grown in the Toulouse area since medieval times. I am thrilled to learn how to dye with you from expert Denise Lambert. You can bring things to dye from home, pick items up at local markets or buy natural fabric from Chateau Dumas. I also hope we can explore printing on our dyed pieces towards the end of the week.
It is going to be a marvellous week filled with creativity, joy and lots and lots of printing... I do hope you can join me. I cannot wait.
Lotta
