A Very Fine Yarn
A Very Fine Yarn is a small batch online yarn shop started by self-described 'passionate yarnie' Danielle Reader. Frustrated by the limited colours available to her at the time, Danielle started hand-dyeing super fine merino and lace-weight cashmere yarn ten years ago to use in her crocheted scarves and bags. After sharing her collection with a few friends, Danielle soon had requests and orders from other knitters, and A Very Fine Yarn was born. Danielle now sells patterns and accessories alongside yarn kits; “A Very Fine Yarn makes very fine things; adored and treasured scarves, necklaces, bags and needle books.”
Talking about developing her signature fine patterns and yarns, Danielle says, “I was tired of blankets, throws, rugs and hats and wanted to make something to wear and use - something more refined than the usual scarves and bags made out of 4ply. I prefer a mottled/tweedy look rather than a solid colour and this is when the search began for a yarn fine enough to be used with two strands at a time, which produces the dappled colours. The patterns are not complicated. The most basic crochet stitches and motifs make the most beautiful pieces such as granny squares and hexagons.”
“We use two strands of very fine merino together (two different colours) so that even a basic kit of 20 provides dozens of colour combinations. A 2mm crochet hook or 2mm knitting needles are used. Some people are put off by thinking the wool is too fine for them but using a 2mm hook is really the same as using a lace-weight yarn so not difficult at all. Because it is light-weight and produces such small motifs, it is perfect for stitching during the warmer months too.”
