Adriana Tavares & BARBARA MACFARLANE

September 21, 2015
Share

In acknowledgement of the London Design Festival this year, Anthropologie has collaborated with the carpet designer Adriana Tavares and painter Barbara Macfarlane. Although their practices appear to be completely different, both cite drawing and colour as a crucial to their artistic processes.

It feels a bit inaccurate and unfair describing Tavares' pieces as carpets, and yet that seems to be the closest one can get to what these strange, colourful and mould-like puddles are. Tavares hand tufts surfaces in order to create these bespoke re-workings of drawings. A series of workshops 'exploring drawing through the body using a variety of mixed media' are accompanying the show. Given that Tavares' has spent much of her time both teaching and researching historic teaching methods her workshops promise to be worth attending.

Working with landscapes, Barbara Macfarlane's work studies light, space and colour from the Outer Hebrides to the South of France. Alongside the Rebecca Hossack art gallery, Anthropologie on Regent Street has commissioned a collection of sketch books and original paintings by the artist Barbara Macfarlane and from her company Khadi Papers. The company was started by Barbara and her husband in partnership with Indian papermaker Vasudevan to introduce Indian handmade papers to artists worldwide. The paper is made from 100% long fibred cotton rag sourced from T shirt cuttings. Set up over 20 years ago, the mill, KHADI PAPERS INDIA, now directly employs over 60 men and women from local villages and indirectly provides work for bookbinders, printers, envelope makers and the carpenter, Irrappa, who makes all the moulds and deckles.
