Alice Caroline Quilts

February 4, 2020
Share

Alice Caroline has recently launched its second Quilt Block of the Month (BOM) project, Jewel Palace Quilt BOM. Following the success of its first Quilt BOM last year with the Radiant Stars Quilt, Alice Garrett, owner and inspiration behind Liberty fabric specialists Alice Caroline, has designed another intricate quilt to be made over a year using the traditional technique of English Paper Piecing (more commonly known as EPP). Month by month, participants sew each block to build their own Alhambra Palace-inspired quilt in Liberty Tana Lawn.

Alice was inspired to create this design by a visit to the palace in southern Spain, she explains: “The Palace is an extraordinary mix of where the Arab world meets Western influences. Arabic geometrical pattern and design are showcased beautifully at the Palace where there are intricately designed tiles on the walls. Each of these geometric patterns are creative and stunning but are arrived at by a mathematical process. I love the way that art and science meet within these tiles and wanted to use that to design my new Quilt BOM.”

There is still time to join the Jewel Palace Quilt BOM sewing community. Every month sewers receive a box containing instructions, Liberty Tana Lawn fabrics and pre-cut papers to make the English Paper Pieced (EPP) blocks. Each block forms a distinctive pattern which will then be appliqued onto an off-white quilting cotton background. The block sizes and patterns will vary each month, with the finished quilt being 60” x 72” (152cm x 183cm). The quilt includes fabrics from the Liberty Tana Lawn 2019/2020 classics and Alice Caroline Exclusive Liberty fabrics. Alice Caroline has collaborated with Aurifil threads to create a bespoke thread collection for the Quilt.

Alice Caroline is also continuing its Quilt SOS project in 2020, which makes quilts for children living in villages run by the charity SOS Children’s Villages. Alice Caroline customers make the quilts, many of them making multiple versions. The project is in its fourth year and over 260 quilts have now been hand-delivered to Romania, Lithuania, Poland and Latvia.

Finally, in the current issue of Selvedge, we have a gorgeous Alice Caroline wash bag to give away to the first one hundred new subscribers or renewals. Big enough to fit all your essential products in one beautiful bag, this strong and spacious bag is made from Liberty Tana Lawn in a range of familiar patterns. Each 26cm x 19cm bag is worth £25.95.
