Another Mad Outfit
You may have read Amanda Carr's piece 'Free for all' in our Ageless issue (64) which highlights the way in which woman 'of a certain age' are expected to dull down their style and quietly retreat into the visual background. As Carr recognises, it can take a strong personality to overcome the pressures of conforming to dull, shapeless dressing later in life - the nonagenarian Iris Apfel is one such example. Apfel is instantly recognisable with her trade mark heavy, circular glasses, loud, embellished dress and topping of white hair. The late film director, Albert Maysles' documentary 'IRIS' explore's Apfel's 93 years and consistently edgy and joyful approach to style and life.
The Book Club are holding an exclusive preview screening of 'IRIS' on Wednesday night, followed by 'a discussion on personal style, self expression and dressing just to please yourself,' with Pandora Sykes (The Sunday Times Style magazine), Sue Kreitzman (featured in the 'Ageless' issue of Selvedge), Davey Sutton (stylist) and Kim Howells (Hunger magazine).
