Guimarães is stretching threads to their breaking point this September. That's the premise CONTEXTILE's eighth edition asks visitors to sit with: not resilience, exactly, but the moment just before something gives way.
CONTEXTILE is an international biennial that draws on textile practice as a lens for asking bigger questions, about labour, ecology, consumption, identity, politics, community. The eighth edition, running 5 September to 29 November across Guimarães and the Ave Valley, takes its title from that lens. Por um Fio, "by a thread," does double duty: a thread stretched too far snaps, but a thread is also the smallest unit of repair, the thing you reach for when something needs mending. Artistic director Cláudia Melo and the curatorial team have built the programme around holding both meanings open at once.

The choice of city isn't incidental. Guimarães and the Ave Valley carry deep industrial textile heritage, and CONTEXTILE works because it puts contemporary art into direct conversation with that existing culture of cloth, its mills, its makers, its material knowledge, rather than arriving from outside it...
