Celia Birtwell for Valentino

June 11, 2015
Share
Valentino has collaborated with Celia Birtwell for their pre fall 2015 collection. Together with Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, Birtwell has worked with Botticelli in mind to produce delicate and celestial pieces, both reminiscent of her earlier work and entirely suitable for now.

Birtwell's larger body of work seems to be testament to the fact that good design is in no way a frivolous exercise. In order to produce work with substance and lasting quality there needs to be an indepth understanding of visual history and culture. Birtwell's own work demonstrates that she reads art and composition naturally – Birtwell and Botticelli's La Primavera are a natural pairing.

Design and fine art are two very different things but when looking at Birtwell's  work, it's hard to understand why design is rarely written about and discussed in the same way. Birtwell's textile design not only correlates directly and clearly to art history, it also takes into account the way in which florals and chintz, for example, have been read and used for centuries – and on top of that it exemplifies a good designer's ability to solidify and influence an idea into a creation that is wearable and desirable. Such products are a vehicle for any amount of histories and conversations.

Embroidery Renaissance-welcome work for the dedicated, passionate & patient artisans keeping the skills & craft alive

LisaMay 8, 2017

Thank you for this post. As an Art History student and a long-time follower of fashion these images are amazing. Makes my heart sing!

valentino is truly the work of loving artisans. The construction, the textiles and the designs are beyond fashion, they are the epitome of beauty. His designs aslo keep alive the artistry of skilled hands- and couture technique that we take for granted these days.

Are these dresses embellished with embroidery, applique or felting techniques?
