Across the Arab world, a bokja is the term for an embellished textile wrapping used to carry personal belongings. Fittingly, Bokja is also the name of Beirut based surface fabrication studio, founded by Hoda Baroudi and Maria Hibri, in 2000. Their approach has an international following — pieces of previously used fabric, each with its own history, find themselves transformed from one life to the next by the unexpected, brilliant juxtapositions of colour, pattern, texture and surface. Each piece, be it furniture, clothing or scarf, is a one-off and comes with its own passport, listing its name, 'date of birth' and description — the start of its new journey. We have one silk-velvet Bokja scarf to give away, worth $650.
Jeremy and Carla Bonner launched Bonner Leather Studio in 2015, and currently work out of their studio in the Cotswolds. Mainly self-taught, they use traditional leather techniques and tools to make each piece by hand, concentrating on simple form and design to create contemporary pieces of function and utility. The Rocking Ose came about from their involvement in MakerProject 2019 where Jeremy made a two seated rocking chair — The Manchester Love Seat — as a way of describing their practice. This in turn led to the exploration of applying movement, or sound, to otherwise static or inanimate objects. It references The Isle of Skye hen basket, which was shaped to coddle and comfort a chicken on the way to market. It was this relationship of the pleasure born out of what is a very simple shape or form that was the starting point for the Rocking Ose. Made with varnished plywood panels and vegetable tanned leather hand-stitched with linen thread, we have one Bonner Leather Studio Rocking Ose to give away, worth £130.00.
This beautiful Jewel Palace Quilt, designed by Alice Caroline (Liberty Fabric specialists), was inspired by a visit to the beautiful palace of Alhambra in southern Spain. Alice has created this quilt in admiration of its geometry and its fusion of science and art, Arabic and Western influences. Sew each exquisite block to build your own Jewel Palace quilt. You will receive beautiful boxes containing instructions, Liberty Tana Lawn fabrics and pre-cut papers to make your English Paper Pieced (EPP) blocks, building into your own gorgeous Liberty quilt. Each block forms a distinctive pattern which will then be appliquéd onto an off-white quilting cotton background to make the finished quilt. We have one Alice Caroline quilt kit to give away, size: 60" x 72" (152cm x 183cm) worth £316.00.
