COVERS TO COVET
As members of our textile community know, Selvedge celebrates our cerebral and sensual addiction to cloth - each page, photo and illustration is as beautiful as the textile stories told within. Our overarching themes, which dictate the content of each issue (and of course the editorial photos featured on the front) are carefully selected - broad enough to encapsulate various facets of a particular fibre, a mood, or a textile tradition, but specific so that our contributors can delve deep and bring to light interesting and evocative textiles stories.
We try to be seasonal: evoking the warmth of wool in winter and the crispness of cotton in summer. However, no matter how ordinary the fibre, whether we are discussing reconstituted wood pulp or the most delicate silk, we always seek to bring you these textiles at their aesthetic and thought-provoking best. If you can't get enough of our pages, we have a couple of gift ideas from Selvedge below for you to consider – or for you to drop hints about. A gift from Selvedge supports us in sustaining the magazine and our work in finding and nurturing textiles from every continent.
With our tote bags, you can take your favourite Selvedge cover out and about and spot fellow Selvedge fans in the wild. Each bag, made of cotton and with nivad tape handles, features one of our most striking and popular covers from the last 15 years. Not wanting to settle for anything less than remarkable, we worked with re-wrap to develop the tote bags and are delighted with the result. They are stylish, roomy, with sturdy handles and a handy inside pocket that is perfect for a phone or a purse.
Re-wrap produces high-quality, hand-made organic cotton totes. The bags are made in rural communities in India. Many of the women who sew the bags come from marginalised sections of society and re-wrap train them in traditional sewing skills to help them gain economic independence. re-wrap have also built partnerships with farmers who grow Seed-to-Shop cotton from which the bags are made, investing in them along the way. Small-scale farmers traditionally have little access to accurate market pricing and are often paid less than it costs for them to produce the crop. re-wrap trades directly with the farmers, ensuring they receive an income that they can build from. The entire process is kind to the environment and kind to people.
Our totes come in a choice of cheerful and striking designs taken from our most popular covers. We hope they will become a symbol of our wonderful community and an invitation to share the most-loved stories from our pages.
From Rosie Lee Tompkins bold improvisational quilts and antique Dutch darning samplers, to Indian chintz and Mexican tenango embroidery, you can now wake up to the beauty of textiles from around the world every day of the year with the Selvedge 2022 Calendar. It's the perfect excuse to spend a couple of weeks admiring each of 12 beautiful textiles from some of our more recent issues.
