DARNING MASTERCLASS WITH TOM OF HOLLAND

January 2, 2017
Share

Tom van Deijnen is a self-taught knitter from The Netherlands, who now lives in Brighton, UK. Technique, tradition and narrative inform much of his work. Under the moniker Tom of Holland, he explores these aspects of knitting and shares his enthusiasm with other knitters through exhibitions and workshops. Hand-knitting has also raised his awareness of the meaning behind garments and his relationship with the clothes he wears. This has led to the Visible Mending Programme, through which Tom provides mending and repair inspiration, skills and services.

Darning Masterclass,10-1pm, £100 incl materials

Tom will teach you two darning techniques (Swiss darning and stocking darning) he will also bring along his darning showcase for plenty of inspiration and talk about why darning and repairing clothes is important to him. You'll take home a comprehensive hand-out, two darning needles and the skills to tackle any holey sock or thinning elbow. All practice materials provided.

For this class no previous darning or knitting experience is necessary. Students are encouraged to bring some things that need fixing.

Specialist Darning Masterclass, 2-5pm, £100 incl materials

This specialist darning class teaches you how to repair holes that are too large for the regular stocking darn. You will be taught two techniques: the first is the web darn, which starts with laying down a foundation in sewing thread and then the stitches are replicated using a darning needle. The second one is knitting in a patch, with various options on how to attach the patch to the edges of the hole. Attendees will take home a comprehensive hand-out, a darning needle, and the skills to repair large holes.

Each class is £100, a day ticket to both classes is £180, price includes materials and light refreshments.

Hosted by Tom Van Deijnen from Tom of Holland
