Dressing During Austerity
It is easy to forget that rationing did not just mean less food, it also meant fewer clothes. The Imperial War Museum's latest exhibition 'Fashion on the Ration' reminds us that not too long ago, customers shopping for clothes were encouraged to use 'the coupon advisory service' in Selfridges department store.
The exhibition takes us through what it was like to dress throughout rationing and explores what individuals did to maintain their style and ostensible sense of self. Whilst reassuringly confirms that limited resources by no means means limited innovation and creativity.
