Hand & Lock Prize 2016
The embroidery atelier Hand & Lock has kept fashion houses, the British Military, the Royal Family and Michael Jackson in some of the finest detail for the last 247 years – although their roots extend as far back as Roman times.
Since 2000 the atelier has been running its own competition to find and support promising young designers – for the winners and those shortlisted it is an invaluable opportunity to progress both creatively and professionally.
As part of the Hand & Lock Mentoring Programme, selected finalists get the opportunity to work closely with an industry expert and develop their designs ahead of the final live panel judging. With over 500 applicants annually, 2015’s winner Emily-Rose Spreadborough was mentored by Selvedge’s founder Polly Leonard in the run-up to the prize as part of Selvedge's mentoring scheme (contact us for more details).
“Buy less. Choose well. Make it last. Quality not quantity. Everybody is buying far too many clothes.” Westwood, V. (2013). The aim of 2016's brief is to create quality design that consumers will cherish for years rather than dispose of when a new trend arises. The product should be well crafted and use materials in an original way that stands the test of time. Watch this space for more exciting talent in 2016.
