I Capture the Castle
This time of year always seems to instil an Armageddon style panic, but yet again, we’ve made it past the 25th and we’re still here. This begs the question- what on earth are we going to do now? We hadn’t made plans past this point.
Never mind, hold off on New Year arrangements for a few of days and curl up with a good book. You can't beat an old favourite such as Dodi Smith’s ‘I Capture The Castle’. Set in a huge old stately home in 1930s rural Suffolk this beautiful coming-of-age tale is naïve, thoughtful and evocative. Our protagonist, Cassandra, has a particular affection for her county, “Rose doesn’t like the flat country, but I always did – flat country seems to give the sky such a chance.” Another thing the ‘flat country’ offers is Melford Hall- a restored National Trust property with generations of its own stories and acres of land to explore. Enjoy a day trip and take a tour of the Beatrix Potter gallery where many of her original watercolours were painted and are exhibited.
