Ideas for Making

Selvedge’s Winter of Making is a six-month celebration of DIY and craft skills. We have gathered all of our making content into one place to make it easy for you to access our free projects, our podcasts and to browse our Zoom workshops. We are adding more courses and kits regularly. As we do this, we would like your suggestions and requests - do you know an artist who you would love to be taught by? Would you want to meet with other Selvedge readers online for a knit evening? Let us know in our virtual suggestion box.

Our latest Zoom workshops and project kits are available to buy. On 28 November, learn techniques for hand-stitched clothing with Gabriela Martínez Ortiz, designer and textile artist and creator of Ofelia & Antelmo, a textile art project that studies hand embroidery. Ofelia represents community, the work of a cooperative of women to make handmade garments designed to be one-size-fits-all, reversible and timeless. Antelmo represents Gabriela’s personal creative journey as the clothes become canvases where she explores techniques, supports, fabrics, textures and colours. Together they form a family of textile pieces where each one is unique and informs the making of the next garment. In the workshop you will learn the stitches Gabriela uses in her work and how they can be used to create surface patterns and manipulate fabrics for garment construction.

Now is the time to make mittens. Get everything you need to try colourwork with our Knitted Mittens Kit by Jenny Berge. Willow is a two thread stranded colourwork mitten pattern inspired by Swedish folk art. The mittens are a great way to start exploring colour changes. ‘A mitten is also a great first project before taking on something bigger, and you will have a fun time while doing it,’ Berge promises.
