India Textile Tour
This winter we will be travelling to India for our first in a series of textile tours that will take us to experience the extraordinary textile cultures of India. We will be meeting many of the artists and designers that we have featured over the last fifteen years to learn about their craft first hand, as if walking through the colourful pages of Selvedge. From the bustle of Delhi, to the delicate beauty of the palaces of Jaipur, and the craft workshops of Gujarat, this journey is a celebration for those with a love of textiles and an adventurous spirit. Our tours will connect you with the evolving traditions of textiles and invite you to experience their journeys. Where better to start than with India?
The winter months are beautiful in India, when the north offers clear blue skies and Hindus celebrate Sankranti, marking the start of longer days. Over two weeks our guests will visit the private homes and studios of fascinating designers and collectors, traditional dyers and weavers, and see unforgettable historical sites and natural wonders.
Beginning in Delhi, the capital of the Mughal Empire and now of modern India, the tour will go to the western states of Rajasthan and Gujarat, where our guests will glimpse the traditional textile arts of block printing, bandhani and lahariya (Indian shibori), metallic embroidery, and a fine tailoring workshop. We will also visit the pink city of Jaipur built by the Rajput Maharajas, as well as the cultural hub of Ahmedabad, home to the Calico Museum and its exquisite silk paintings and textiles.
Our textile tour to India is now sold out but we are keeping a waiting list. To put your name on the list please email Catherine Harris (foundation@selvedge.org). Future tours will be announced on our textile tours page, so make sure you check it regularly! Read more about Indian textiles in the Chakra and India issues. Subscribe to Selvedge here.
