Better Together

The Whitechapel Gallery presents the work of Portuguese artist Leonor Antunes in new site-specific commission, the frisson of togetherness. This title was taken from the British architect Alison Smithson’s description of how young people bring together different elements of style to define their identity and social fidelity. For this installation, Antunes reflects and celebrates the history of the gallery and its surrounding area. Through her chosen materials, she conjures up the memory of the neighbourhood using hemp rope alongside materials from stables and leather shops.
By collecting momentary histories of 20th century architecture, design and art, Antunes’ work reflects on the functions of everyday objects while exploring the potential of modernist forms. This exhibition investigates the values and ideas that have become embedded in objects, and instead transforms them into abstract structures that bring imagination to the forefront.
Informed by two artists, Mary Martin and Lucia Nogueira, the frisson of togetherness features hanging and floor-based sculptures illuminated by lights designed by the artist. The sculptures serve as screens and dividers, creating zones that direct the viewer's journey through the show, and through local history.
