Lost Threads by Lubaina Himid
Planning your new key exhibitions?
A defining figure in the 1980s Black British arts movement, the Turner-Prize-winning artist Lubaina Himid is a renowned artist in the UK, known for exploring Black experience and women’s creativity. Now, the public will be able to see a work of art by Himid which has only been exhibited once before.
As a continuation of Himid’s research into the relationship between fashion, colonialism, women’s labour and global migrations, Lost Threads, will see lengths of colourful fabric synonymous with African dress cascade through The Holburne Museum’s gallery and staircase.
One of her most expansive and dramatic works, the vibrant and colourful installation comprises four 100-metre-long lengths of Dutch batik fabric that will cascade through the museum, interrupting the space literally and symbolically. The textiles used highlight the juxtaposition of fashion with themes such as colonialism, women’s labour and migration; echoing histories of suffering, exploitation, global trade and migration.
Lost Threads will be on show at The Holburne Museum from 19 January - 21 April 2024.
