Majeda Clarke Macarons

Weaver Majeda Clarke has launched a new collection of three blankets, in partnership with Fortnum and Mason, inspired by the delicate colours of macaroons. The blankets were woven in a traditional Welsh mill using a centuries old technique. They are made of Geelong lambswool, a type of fine wool that is comparable to cashmere for its softness and handle.

Majeda explains: “Fortnums approached me to design a blanket that was inspired by their heritage and the result was the Macaron design. These are the delicious pastel colours of the macaroons behind the glass counters as you enter the store, complemented by the signature aqua of the label.”

The Macaron collection consists of three colour ways: Sorbet, Denim and Sage. All colours are available on Majeda Clarke’s website and Sorbet and Denim will also be available through Fortnum and Mason – which reopens this month – and various galleries.

Majeda was inspired by her grandmother’s Jamdani sari to begin a career in handmade textiles and she creates jamdani scarves and wall hangings alongside designing woollen homewares produced in UK mills; “ It was my grandmother’s Jamdani sari that set me on my journey into cloth: a fascination with the stories of that fabric woven for the Moghuls to questions about the weaver’s relevance in the present day and the dynamics of heritage. Textiles evoke memory; the contours of the wearer remain where cloth sags, frays and stains. I still have that original Jamdani sari, lovingly hand woven all those years ago.”

“I am intrigued by the imperfections in hand woven fabric, the randomness of pattern and faded narratives embedded in cloth. Flaws give a cloth value, signalling the hand of the maker. This theme is reflected in my own hand made pieces often dyed to seep colour and expose the threads where warp and weft fail to meet.”
