Meet Karolina Merska of folka

Delicate, colourful, and intricately crafted from rye straw and coloured paper, Pająki (pah-yonk-ee) are traditional Polish chandeliers made by hand for special occasions. These decorative mobiles have a rich history dating back to the mid-18th century, when women created them to adorn their homes for celebrations such as Christmas, Easter, weddings, and christenings. Pająki also symbolize the harvest and happiness in the New Year. Traditionally suspended from ceilings, alongside vibrant paper cut-outs, paintings, and paper flowers, they became beloved folk decorations throughout Polish villages.

Karolina Merska, originally from Poland, is a modern artist dedicated to preserving the Pająki tradition. Inspired by Polish folk art, she began making these intricate chandeliers in 2015 and has since shared her passion globally through workshops held at her studio in East London, various international locations and in her independent online shop, folka. Her work has garnered attention from renowned publications such as Channel 4, The World of Interiors, House and Garden, Elle Decoration, The Telegraph, Time Out, and Harper’s Bazaar.

In May 2021, Karolina published her first book, Making Mobiles: Create Beautiful Polish Pajaki from Natural Materials, which explores the history of Pająki and provides guidance on creating these stunning mobiles from sustainable materials. Through her artistry and education, Merska has played a key role in bringing this unique Polish craft to a global audience.

Join us for an exclusive opportunity to meet Karolina Merska, the renowned Pająki artist, at our Meet the Maker event on Sunday, 27 October at 15:00 BST. For just £5, you'll gain personal insight into her craft, have the chance to ask her questions, and become part of our vibrant textile community. Don’t miss this inspiring session – secure your spot by clicking here.

Additionally, Karolina will be leading an in-person Mini Pająki Workshop at our Selvedge Winter Fair 2024 on 30 November, held at the beautiful St Mary's Church in Marylebone, London. Learn the intricate art of creating these traditional Polish chandeliers firsthand. Reserve your place now by clicking here.
