Miwa Chosei - Delight of Color
Miwa Chosei's paintings are predominantly water colour, of flowers, birds and landscapes. The title of this show is hardly surprising given Chosei's focus on colour. Furthermore, the museum in which it is exhibited is a destination in itself. Both the interior and exterior were built and designed by Insho Domoto in 1966, a great craftsman and Nihonga painter as well as mentor to Chosei.
Born in 1901 to a father who specialised in Western style painting and trained by Insho Domoto, as well as studying at the Kyoto City School of Municipal Art, Chosei developed an original practice that combined both Western and Japanese styles. His colours, subject matter and flatness are reminiscent of David Hockney's paintings. Perhaps, as with Hockney also, it is refreshing to see paintings where the decorative is taken seriously and delivered with conviction.
This show includes one hundred and twenty of Chosei's works and charts his hugely successful career, in which, from the end of the Second World War onwards, he won many prestigious awards including the special prize for the 15th and 8th Teiten Exhibitions. In 1979, he became a member of the Japan Art Academy. Although Chosei died 34 years ago in Kyoto, aged 82, his work remains a fresh and interesting approach as to what to do with a canvas.
