Mouki Mou

I have fallen in love- yes really - admittedly I am impetuous and it is on the rebound; but nevertheless this is the real thing. My heart has been broken by the high street, a haven of wonder in my youth: the once-loved stores have been transformed into bargain basements of blandness with nothing to ignite the heart, never mind the wallet. MoukiMou56Mouki Mou 29 Chiltern Street Until yesterday that is when I visited Chiltern Street.  Five minutes west of Marylebone High Street,  it's full of  pretty shop fronts hosting an eclectic collection of stores including the only branch of  Cire Trudon outside France –the oldest and most prestigious wax manufacturer in the world with a history dating back to the 1600s. There is also Howarths, internationally renowned makers of oboes; and Cadenheads whisky shop and tasting room.

For me the jewel in the crown is Mouki Mou at number 29. The store opened by Maria Lemos in 2013 has a quiet entrance selling delicate jewellery and fragrance. It is more lovely and less intimidating that Dover Street Market. However, when you descend the spiral staircase you fall down the rabbit hole into wonderland. The warren of tiny rooms are an utter delight, floors decorated with encaustic tiles reminiscent of Parco dei Principi in Sorento.  Her offering  from  some of my favourite designers include coats by Toogood in thick, stiff canvas, silk day dresses with hand embroidered details from Jupe by Jackie, Dosa classics in divine colours, an Art & Science handbag to die for and separates in interesting wovens from 45rpm – a Japanese brand I have been following since I discovered their store in 169 Mercer St, New York a decade ago. This is as well as hand carved wooden spoons that would make perfect stocking fillers and a poncho by Denis Colomb, the French King of Cashmere, that I simply can't live without.577bb3f613c9db936f6801391892007bMoukiMou62

The temptation to submit when faced with a long list is long and a deadline fast approaching-  my advice is to Keep Calm and Keep away from the High Street.

Mouki Mou, 29 Chiltern Street, London, W1U 7PL
